Moroccan watermelon reaches European markets from May, before southern European production gets into its summer stride. For importers, wholesalers and buying centres, watermelon from Morocco is an early-season origin: it lets you open a programme several weeks ahead of European volumes, then run it through to September.
This guide is written for professional buyers. It covers what you need to know before placing an order: varieties, calendar, sizes, packing, compliance and logistics. vetafresh has exported fresh fruit and vegetables since 2009, from Aït Melloul in the Agadir region; the lead times and documents described below are those of our own shipments.
Watermelon varieties exported from Morocco
Most exports are seedless, red-fleshed varieties. This is the type European retail chains and wholesalers expect: the fruit sells whole, halved or in film-wrapped quarters, and a cut surface shows no black seeds.
Seedless varieties are triploid hybrids: the fruit develops no hard seeds, only a few soft, edible white seed coats. On the seedless watermelon in our catalogue, Brix — the sugar content — is checked at harvest. That is the safeguard against picking too early to gain a few days of season.
Galia and Charentais: melons from the same range
At vetafresh, watermelon belongs to the Melons & watermelons range, which also covers Galia and Charentais melons over the same period. A buyer building a summer programme can therefore source the range from a single supplier. Mixed loads in one container are decided case by case: melons give off ethylene, which watermelon is sensitive to, and the two do not share the same temperature set point.
Season and availability calendar
The Moroccan watermelon campaign runs from May to September, in three phases:
- May – June, early season. This is the window where the Moroccan origin makes the difference, ahead of European volumes. Programmes are best booked before the campaign starts.
- July – August, high summer. Demand peaks across European markets and the Moroccan origin sits alongside local production. Weekly departures continue.
- September, late season. Availability is confirmed week by week; this is when a programme can be extended as European production slows down.
Exact dates shift with each year's weather. For a weekly programme, the safest approach is to fix volumes and departure windows before the campaign opens; every quote states current availability.
Sizes, packing and pallet formats
Watermelon is sold by size, meaning the unit weight of the fruit. Our catalogue offers two size bands:
- 6 – 8 kg;
- 8 – 12 kg.
The right band depends on your channel: in-store sales by the piece need uniform fruit, whereas wholesale and fresh-cut operations tend to work by weight. Packing follows the same logic:
- Export cartons — sized fruit packed in cartons, for retail and customers who resell by the piece. Size is then also expressed as the number of fruits per carton.
- Bulk or wooden pallets — loaded by weight, on pallets of around 1,000 kg, for the wholesale trade.
In a quotation request, specify the size (weight band or fruits per carton), packaging type, pallet format and labelling. Together with volume, these are what set the price. If your specification requires a minimum Brix, state it in the request.
Quality, certification and traceability
Our watermelons are packed in stations audited to GlobalG.A.P. for good agricultural practice and GRASP for working conditions. vetafresh also holds ISO 22000, BRCGS and EU Organic certification, and is approved by ONSSA, Morocco's national food safety authority.
Every watermelon lot ships with three documents:
- the shipment's phytosanitary certificate;
- a pesticide residue analysis, run every campaign to check compliance with the maximum residue levels (MRLs) of the destination market;
- the temperature record for the journey.
Traceability goes down to the lot: each pallet carries a number that links it to its plot of origin. If a question comes up on an arrival, we trace back from the pallet to the plot and the packing station. Our approach to quality is set out on the About page.
Quality criteria to specify
Beyond size and Brix, a watermelon specification usually covers a few visible points:
- rind: even colour and striping, free from sunburn, bruising or cracks;
- ground spot, where the fruit rested in the field: creamy yellow on a ripe fruit, whitish on one picked too early;
- flesh: red and firm, with no hollow heart.
The more precisely these criteria are set out in the request, the more precise the quote.
Logistics to Europe and beyond
Departures are weekly from Agadir and Casablanca, in two formats:
- Full reefer — a dedicated refrigerated container, for regular programmes and full volumes;
- Refrigerated groupage — for part loads, a first trial or a mix of several products.
Transit to Perpignan, the redistribution hub for France and northern Europe, takes about four days. The cold chain is continuous and recorded: the temperature log is handed over with the lot documents. The set point is agreed at order; watermelon does not tolerate excessive cold, which damages rind and flesh, and the log lets you check the set point was held.
We work on every Incoterm from EXW to DDP: you choose where costs and risk transfer, from the packing-station gate to customs-cleared delivery at your dock. We also ship to West Africa — Dakar, Abidjan, Accra — and to North America. Details of our sourcing and logistics services are on the Services page.
